The Pandemic We’re Not Talking About…
We all remember 2020. Masks, lockdowns, endless Zoom calls, kids learning from laptops propped on cereal boxes. But while COVID eventually eased, another pandemic has been quietly gaining ground — and I see it every week in my San Mateo clinic.
I call it the new COVID: Tech Neck, Forward Head Posture, and Kyphosis.
It’s not an official CDC alert. No one’s making nightly news updates about it. But like the frog sitting in a pot of water as the temperature rises, millions of people are living in a slow boil of poor posture, subtle spinal changes, and creeping pain. They don’t notice… until something snaps.
What Exactly Is Tech Neck?
“Tech Neck” is the modern label for what chiropractors and physical medicine specialists have been warning about for years: the forward head posture caused by spending hours looking down at screens.
Every inch your head shifts forward from its natural alignment adds 10 pounds of stress to your spine. The human head already weighs about 10–12 pounds. Tilt it forward a couple of inches, and suddenly your neck and upper back are carrying the equivalent of a bowling ball… all day, every day.
That’s how we get:
- Neck pain
- Headaches
- Shoulder tension
- Upper back strain
- And in severe cases, structural changes like kyphosis (the forward rounding of the spine)
Kyphosis: When Posture Becomes Permanent
Kyphosis isn’t new. For centuries, we associated it with osteoporosis in older adults. But now, I’m seeing it in teenagers. That forward hunch — shoulders rounded, head jutting forward — is no longer just a phase. For some, it’s becoming structural.
And here’s the scary part: once kyphosis sets in, it’s much harder to reverse. What starts as “just a little stiffness” or “my shoulders rounding” can eventually lock into place, changing the shape of the spine.
This is why I compare it to COVID. It spreads silently. It doesn’t feel urgent until it suddenly is.
The Hidden Costs of Forward Head Posture
Why should you care if your posture isn’t picture-perfect? Because forward head posture isn’t just about looking slouched in photos. It can lead to:
- Chronic pain: Neck, back, and shoulders bear the brunt.
- Nerve compression: Leading to numbness, tingling, or even sciatica pain.
- Headaches and migraines: From constant muscle tension.
- Reduced lung capacity: Rounded posture limits rib expansion.
- Fatigue: Your body wastes energy compensating for poor alignment.
- Balance issues: Postural shifts can throw off your center of gravity, increasing fall risk, especially for those with peripheral neuropathy.
It’s not just cosmetic; it’s functional. And over time, it can become permanent.
And for younger people, the impact is far worse — their bodies don’t trigger pain signal as quickly as adults, so their brains don’t realize that damage is happening until, well, it has happened. An adult slouching might notice discomfort within minutes, but a teenager can sit that way for hours without recognizing the strain their spine is under and the damage that has occurred.
The Frog in the Pot: Why We Don’t Notice
If you sit at a desk all day or scroll on your phone for hours, you may not feel the damage immediately. The human body is amazing at compensating. You shift, stretch, crack your neck, pop some Advil, and keep going.
But like the frog in gradually heating water, your body adapts until the stress reaches a breaking point. Suddenly, you wake up with searing neck pain. Or your chiropractor (hi, that’s me) points out that your shoulders are inches ahead of your hips. Or worse, you end up with a disc injury that requires spinal decompression therapy just to walk without pain.
Why I’m Calling This the New COVID
- It’s widespread. Almost every patient I see now has some element of forward head posture.
- It’s silent at first. No urgent symptoms until things have progressed.
- It’s lifestyle-driven. Screens are the new smoking: omnipresent, addictive, culturally normalized.
- It’s preventable. But only if we recognize it early and take action.
What We Can Do About It
The good news? Unlike a viral pandemic, the cure isn’t elusive. It’s in our daily habits, our posture awareness, and yes — the right chiropractic care.
Here’s my back-to-basics playbook:
1. Screen Awareness
Bring your screen up to eye level. If you wouldn’t drive with your chin glued to your chest, don’t scroll that way either.
2. Movement Breaks
Set a timer every 30–45 minutes. Stand up, stretch, roll your shoulders, walk a lap. Your spine loves variety.
3. Strengthening Exercises
Focus on your postural muscles: deep neck flexors, mid-back stabilizers, core. A strong frame supports better alignment.
4. Chiropractic Adjustments
Realigning the spine helps restore motion and reduce the stress Tech Neck creates.
5. Spinal Decompression
For patients already experiencing disc compression or sciatica relief needs, decompression therapy can create space, reduce nerve pressure, and allow healing.
6. Balance Training
For those with neuropathy or vertigo, postural correction also improves balance — preventing falls before they happen.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
We’re only at the beginning of seeing Tech Neck’s impact. Kids who grew up with tablets are becoming adults. Workers who shifted to remote jobs in 2020 are still sitting at makeshift desks in 2025. The average person spends 7+ hours a day on screens. Remember when we used to get 8 hours of sleep?
That’s thousands of hours each year in a position the spine was never meant to hold. Unless we treat it seriously, we’re looking at a generation with accelerated spinal degeneration, more disc injuries, and a rise in chronic pain conditions.
As a chiropractor in San Mateo, I’ve spent decades helping patients manage pain, correct posture, and rediscover balance. But even I’m alarmed at how rapidly Tech Neck is taking hold.
Don’t Wait for Something to Snap
If you’ve ever thought, “It’s just stiffness, I’ll be fine,” take this as your gentle nudge — or maybe not-so-gentle. Like the frog in the pot, you don’t want to wait until the water’s boiling.
Check your posture. Notice if your head is forward of your shoulders. See if your upper back feels rounded. Pay attention to those dull headaches, that end-of-day neck ache, or the pins-and-needles in your arm.
These are warning signs. And the earlier we address them, the easier it is to reverse.
